Everything you need to know about my rock isn't responding.

My Rock Isn't Responding

If your rock is not responding to commands, attention, or affection, this article will help you confirm whether the behavior is expected.

First, confirm what you mean by "responding"

A rock on PetRock.cloud is not designed to produce outputs in response to inputs. The platform manages the rock's lifecycle, billing, region, and metadata. The rock itself is inert.

If your expectation was that the rock would emit events, log messages, or generate webhook deliveries unprompted, please review Webhook Setup for an explanation of which events do and do not fire.

That said, there are real platform-level conditions that can present as the rock being unreachable. Work through the steps below to rule them out.

Step 1: Check the status indicator

  1. Open the rock detail page in the dashboard.
  2. Locate the status indicator next to the rock name.
Status Action
Idle Expected. No action required.
Pending Wait up to 90 seconds for provisioning to complete.
Provisioning Failed Proceed to Step 4.
Archived The rock has been archived. Unarchive from Settings → Danger Zone.

Step 2: Verify the API is reachable

Run the following from a terminal:

curl -i https://api.petrock.cloud/v1/rocks/{rock_id} \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $PETROCK_API_TOKEN"

Expected response:

HTTP/1.1 200 OK
Content-Type: application/json

{
  "id": "rock_abc123",
  "name": "your-rock",
  "status": "idle",
  "region": "us-east-stone-1"
}

If you receive a 200 OK with "status": "idle", the rock is healthy and behaving correctly.

Step 3: Check the status page

Visit status.petrock.cloud for any active incidents. Regional incidents that affect dashboard or API availability are posted within 5 minutes of detection.

Step 4: Restart the management plane

If the rock's status indicator is stuck or the dashboard is showing stale data, the management plane can be reset for that rock:

  1. Navigate to Settings → Advanced → Management Plane.
  2. Click Reset Management Plane.
  3. Wait 30-60 seconds.

This action does not disturb the rock itself. The rock will remain in place during and after the reset.

Step 5: Confirm expected behavior

After working through the steps above, your rock should display Idle status and return 200 OK from the API. The rock will continue to not respond to attention, commands, or affection. This is the expected and intended steady state.

Warning: If the rock begins responding to commands, contact support immediately. This indicates a tenant isolation breach and is treated as a P1 incident.
