My Rock Won't Sit or Stay
This is a quick FAQ for one of the most common questions we receive. We have written it as a standalone article so it can be linked directly.
Short answer
Your rock is sitting and staying. It is doing both, continuously, with no gaps.
There is no need to open a support ticket about this.
Longer answer
The terms sit and stay in the context of PetRock.cloud are not active commands. They are descriptors of the rock's default operating mode. A rock that has been provisioned is, by default:
- Sitting (in its assigned region)
- Staying (in the same place)
These behaviors are uninterruptible by user action and are the foundation of the platform's 99.99% rock-position availability SLA on the Monolith tier.
"But it doesn't look like it's sitting"
The dashboard does not provide a visual indicator that distinguishes "sitting" from "standing" or "rolling," because rocks do not enter those states. The thumbnail is a static representation. If you are looking for visual confirmation:
- Open the rock detail page.
- View the Position History tab.
- The graph will show a flat line indicating no position changes since provisioning.
"It used to stay, but now it isn't staying"
If your rock's position field has changed in the API response, this would be a P1 incident and you should contact support immediately. To check:
curl https://api.petrock.cloud/v1/rocks/{rock_id}/position \
-H "Authorization: Bearer $PETROCK_API_TOKEN"
A normal response:
{
"rock_id": "rock_abc123",
"position": "stationary",
"since": "2026-01-15T08:30:00Z"
}
The since timestamp should match your rock's provisioning timestamp. If it does not, contact support.
When to open a support ticket
Open a ticket only if:
- The
positionfield returns a value other thanstationary. - The
sincetimestamp updates without user action. - Your rock generates
rock.position_changedwebhook events.
Otherwise, the rock is sitting and staying as expected. No further action is required.
