Learn how to adopting your first rock.

Adopting Your First Rock

Welcome to PetRock.cloud. This guide will walk you through creating your account, provisioning your first rock, and confirming that your rock is operating within expected parameters.

Before you begin

You will need:

  • A valid work or personal email address
  • A payment method (required even on the free Pebble tier for identity verification)
  • An idea of what you would like to name your rock (see Naming Conventions for guidance)

Step 1: Create your account

  1. Navigate to app.petrock.cloud/signup.
  2. Enter your email address and choose a password (minimum 12 characters, one number, one symbol).
  3. Verify your email by clicking the link sent to your inbox. The verification link expires after 24 hours.
  4. Complete the workspace setup wizard. Your workspace slug will be used in API endpoints, so choose carefully.

Step 2: Provision your rock

Once you reach the dashboard, you will see an empty state with a Provision Rock button.

  1. Click Provision Rock in the upper right of the dashboard.
  2. Select a region. We recommend the region closest to where the rock will not be doing anything. See Data Residency for the full region list.
  3. Choose a tier. The default Pebble tier is sufficient for most first-time adopters.
  4. Enter a name for your rock. Names must be DNS-safe.
  5. Click Confirm Adoption.

Provisioning typically completes in 30 to 90 seconds. During this time, the dashboard will display a Pending status.

Step 3: Verify your rock

After provisioning, your rock should display a status of Idle.

Note: Idle is the optimal and intended steady state for a rock. No action is required when your rock is idle. If you see any other status, refer to the troubleshooting articles linked below.

You can confirm your rock is correctly provisioned by running:

curl https://api.petrock.cloud/v1/rocks/{rock_id} \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $PETROCK_API_TOKEN"

A successful response will return a JSON object with "status": "idle".

What to expect after adoption

Your rock will not perform any actions, send any notifications, or generate any logs by default. This is expected behavior. Your rock is now under management.
