Step-by-step instructions for add or update a payment method.

Add or Update a Payment Method

This article covers how to add a new payment method, update an existing one, and switch the default payment method on your account.

Supported payment types

  • Credit and debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover)
  • ACH bank transfer (US accounts only)
  • SEPA Direct Debit (EU accounts on Boulder tier or higher)
  • Invoice billing with NET-30 terms (Monolith tier only, requires sales approval)

Adding a credit or debit card

  1. Navigate to Settings → Billing → Payment Methods.
  2. Click Add Payment Method.
  3. Select Card.
  4. Enter your card number, expiration, CVC, and billing address.
  5. Click Add Card.

Your card is verified with a $1 authorization hold that is released within 7 days. The hold does not appear on your statement at most issuers, but some issuers display it as a temporary pending charge.

Adding an ACH bank account

ACH setup uses Plaid for instant verification.

  1. Navigate to Settings → Billing → Payment Methods.
  2. Click Add Payment Method.
  3. Select Bank Account (ACH).
  4. Choose your bank and authenticate via Plaid.
  5. Confirm the account to use.

If your bank is not supported by Plaid, you can use manual verification, which involves two micro-deposits sent within 1-2 business days.

Setting a default payment method

The default payment method is used for all recurring charges. To change it:

  1. From Payment Methods, locate the method you want to designate as default.
  2. Click the overflow menu (three dots) and select Set as Default.
  3. The change takes effect immediately. The next billing cycle will charge the new default.

Note: You cannot delete the only payment method on file unless you are also canceling your subscription. Add a new method first, then remove the old one.

Updating an expired card

When a card expires, the default method does not automatically change. You will receive an email reminder 30 days before expiration.

  1. Click Update next to the expired card.
  2. Enter the new expiration date and CVC.
  3. The card number stays the same if you are simply renewing the same physical card.

If the card number has changed, add a new card and remove the old one.

Failed payment retries

If a charge fails, our billing system retries on the following schedule:

Attempt Timing
1 At due date
2 3 days after first failure
3 7 days after first failure
4 14 days after first failure

After the fourth failure, the workspace enters a grace period of 7 days during which dashboard access is read-only. Rocks are not affected during the grace period; they continue to be inert.
